According to CBT therapy, the way a person thinks and feels affects the way they behave. If a person is feeling distressed, their perception of a situation may not be realistic or effective and they may react in an unhelpful manner. Mindfulness based cognitive therapy (MBCT), much like cognitive therapy, mindfulness based cognitive therapy operates on the theory that if you have a history of depression and become distressed, you are more likely to return to those automatic cognitive processes that triggered a depressive episode in the past. The combination of mindfulness and cognitive therapy is what makes MBCT so effective. The practice of mindfulness helps you to observe and identify your feelings and be grounded to the present moment to maintain composure and not be overwhelmed by what might be or future plans. MBCT encourages clarity of thought and provides you with the tools needed to more easily let go of negative thoughts and cope in that moment. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) teaches you how to accept your hardships and commit to making necessary behavioural changes.
